Mars Petcare US is voluntarily recalling two lots of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2-ounce dog food after discovering the products may contain metal and plastic foreign material.
According to the company, the affected cans did not meet its internal safety and quality standards and had originally been sent to a third-party vendor for destruction. Mars later discovered the products were allegedly diverted and fraudulently sold into the U.S. marketplace instead of being destroyed.
The recalled dog food may contain sharp pieces of metal and plastic that could pose a choking hazard or cause cuts and blockages in a dog's gastrointestinal tract if consumed.
The recall applies only to the following lot codes:
- 613C3KKCFC
- 613C1KKCFC
No other Pedigree products or Mars Petcare US pet food products are included in the recall.
Mars says it has not received any reports of pet illness or injury related to the recalled products. The company is also working with authorities to determine how the products entered the marketplace.
Consumers who purchased the affected canned dog food should not feed it to their pets and should contact Pedigree for a replacement product. Pet owners whose dogs may have eaten the recalled food and are showing signs of illness should contact their veterinarian.
