Galanz is recalling about 121,680 retro-style refrigerators after dozens of reported fires, including one that resulted in a death, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The recall covers select 7.6 cubic foot Galanz Retro Refrigerators sold in black, blue, red, and white. The affected units have internal electrical components that can short circuit and catch fire, creating serious fire and burn hazards.
The CPSC is aware of 34 reported fires involving the recalled refrigerators. One of those fires resulted in a fatality, according to a local fire department report.
The recalled refrigerators were sold at Home Depot stores nationwide and on Amazon between January 2019 and September 2022 for about $330 to $520.
Affected refrigerators measure about 58 inches tall and feature a retro-style design with a separate top freezer, three adjustable glass shelves, and one crisper drawer. The recall applies only to units with date codes from December 2018 through December 2020 and one of the following model numbers:
- BCD-215V-62H
- GLR76TRDER
- GLR76TBKER
- GLR76TBEER
- GLR76TWEER
The model number and date code are printed on a white label in the upper left corner on the back of the refrigerator.
Consumers should unplug the recalled refrigerators immediately and stop using them until they have been repaired. Galanz is offering a free in-home repair by a qualified technician.
